Sainte Marie de Ré is a small village of 3000 inhabitants on the south-west coast, opposite the island of Oléron and the fortified tower of Fort Boyard. The city of la Rochelle, on the mainland, is connected by a bridge of about 3 km. It has 75 000 inhabitants.
